Thinking about your fall family outfits?
Start here to dress your family in the easiest way every.
Fall family photos in Chicago are around the corner. The suburbs including Northbrook, Deerfield, Evanston and Skokie will have beautiful fall colors all around with the extra fall foliage. With the fall season sometimes being short and usually unpredictable for when the cold will set in, don’t wait until the last possible second to book your family session.
With booking your session comes the (normally) dreaded questions about wardrobe. Picking outfits for everyone is by far my #1 most requested ask when it comes to preparation for you family shoot. It can certainly feel overwhelming. Heck, even as a photographer I still get a little nervous on figuring out what everyone should wear….. even after I’ve outfitted my family a countless number of times.
So, follow along on with these tips and make it easy as possible with fall in mind!
Think about your color scheme now. The following color combinations are my favorite for fall but really you can use any color. I particularly love those deep, saturated jewel tone colors – think cranberry, mustard, navy and hunter green. These can look great with a combination of some more neutral ones including cream, tan, and brown. I love this color combination because it looks great with the backdrop of those changing colored leaves and also words well with any holiday card without giving off that overly “holiday feel.”
Mom, you get the VIP treatment. You need to pick your outfit first. When you love what you are wearing, I guarantee you’ll be happier, and the photos are going to look better. I particularly love long dresses or skirts on mom but it’s also totally okay to go jeans! Whatever you decide, make sure it fits well and that you can move. My session includes a lot of movement…. You’ll probably be sitting, standing, dancing, walking, throwing kids in the air, carrying around your baby and more. The last think you want to worry about is a dress or skirt that gets too short. You won’t want to be constantly pulling up your jeans (no saggy tushes here!) or pulling your blouse down then you move around. Also, you don’t need to be afraid of prints. You can totally wear them.
From there, you outfit everyone else in the family. Because this is a FALL family photography session, think about all the fun fashion elements you can bring into your photos like hats and boots. For added warmth for everyone, think about adding scarfs for parents or sweaters or vests for children. For girls, adding an extra layer under dresses including leggings or long sleeve shirts under sleeveless dresses add a way to keep littles warm without adding lots of extra bulk. You can also consider knee high socks as another way to keep them warm. For boys, I typically think about layering very cute jackets or sweaters on top of button downs.
There are lots of options for your entire family and guess what? I help you with all the tough decisions should you want that service. I’ll send you ideas of what I love to shop for and places to go to find those items. Usually, you can honestly just shop your own closest to find something that totally works! I’m always here to help with suggestion and I can’t wait to see you all in your fall outfits.
